Oldest Collegiate Sporting Event goes to Harvard

Published by emismom under College Sports Edit This

The Harvard-Yale Regatta, the oldest collegiate sporting event, was held this past weekend, with the Crimson sweeping the four events to take the title.

The annual event was first held in 1852 on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. This was the 143rd meeting.

Harvard trailed early in the four-mile race, held on the Thames River in New London, Conn., but came on strong to take the race in a time of 18:54.1, a mere eight seconds in front of the Yalies, who clocked in at 19:01.6.

With the win, Harvard swept all four of the regatta’s races. The Crimson won the two-mile Combination Race on Friday, then followed that up with wins in the two-mile Freshman Race and the three-mile Junior Varsity Race.

Harvard reclaims the title after Yale held it for one year. Prior to 2007, Harvard had won the Regatta seven consecutive years. Harvard holds a series lead 89-54.
