Florida Football Player Charged with Using Dead Woman’s Credit Card
OK, here’s one from the “you’ve got to be kidding me” file.
The University of Florida has kicked junior safety Jamar Hornsby off the team. Why? Because he allegedly used the credit card of a woman who was killed in a car accident along with a teammate of Hornsby’s six months ago.
Hornsby turned himself in to Gainesville police after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Seems that he is accused of using Ashley Slonina’s gas card for six months. He is charged with credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.
How about charging him with incredibly poor decision making skills and lack of any clue whatsoever?
Hornsby, who is out of jail on his own recognizance, stands accused of using the card 70 times, for a total of $3,000 in charges. Steve Maynard, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said, “I would love to hear the explanation for utilizing the card of a deceased person.”
Add me to that list.
Hornsby apparently first used the card the day after the fatal accident, October 13, 2007. Slonina was a passenger on the motorcycle of Gator walk-on Michael Guilford, who was also killed in the accident when the bike hit a curb. There isn’t word on how he came into possession of the card.
I like this part: Hornsby is a Social & Behavioral Sciences major. I have a feeling they will be studying this in class really soon.
Urban Meyer wasted no time in his dismissal of Hornsby, offering a terse, “He is not a part of this program,” in a release issued by the University.
This is just unbelievable to me. Was Hornsby actually stupid enough to think he would get away with this? Did he think no one would ever notice? I mean, come on!
At any rate, Hornsby managed to make a fool of himself, and add insult to the deaths of the two students.
Bravo to Urban Meyer, who wasted no time in kicking Hornsby off the team. No “we’ll see how this plays out” or “we’ll let the courts do their job and base our decision on that outcome.” Just a “don’t let the door hit you in the butt on your way to jail.”
I really don’t know what else to say… except I am reminded of a phrase from the old Drew Carey Show… “This is more than sad. This is more than pathetic. This is PATHETISAD.”
How true.
